Naschmarkt and Sachertort

Rising early to go to the Naschtmarkt and flea market today was such a difference from American open air markets if you can even find one! The smells were so pungent and the spices seemed to hang in the air. Sweetened candy fruits and so many different stuffed olives made my mouth water. Those selling goods would yell at you to get you to buy stuff and they were characters all to themselves. At the end of the transaction the seller said "I love you baby" to me and i couldn't help but laugh. How had he meant it? Well in any case i was entertained. I had a kabob and the meat tasted so fresh and so did the veggies on it. For just a few Euro a person can eat well, one thing i do miss is seating. There is nowhere to sit anywhere unless you go into a cafe. A price that is easily forgotten with the first bite though. We went to a park and relaxed for a while and watching the children run around was fun. A kid is a kid and for a moment i forgot where i was, only the enormous yellow slide gave it away as our parks lack such a daring addition.

Later we found a pillar that our professor had asked us to find and while I must still investigate the name of it we spoke to a local bookseller who told us that it commemorates those that died from the plague. When looking up at the gilded pillar one cannot help but feel microscopic and only be able to pick out some things since there is so much going on. The crown and an Eagle perhaps in addition to the plague it is an equivalent to the story of ascensions to heaven and the fall of man. This was a humbling baroque pillar that made me want to take more art history classes.
